Somalia: journalist killed in newsroom
Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan’s is the first journalist killed in Somalia this year. The NUJ is calling on authorities to swiftly investigate his murder and hold the perpetrator to account.
The National Union of Journalists has joined the International Federation of Journalists in condemning the killing of Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan. The reporter for Somali National Television was murdered on 13 March from a fatal shot to the head by a security guard.
With over two decades of experience, Ahmed Bulhan’s journalism promoted peace and reconciliation in the conflict ridden area of Galmudug.
No statement over the killing has been published by the police and the NUJ and sister union the National Union of Somali Journalists, is urging an immediate investigation with the perpetrator brought to justice.
Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the death of journalist Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan. We urge the Somali authorities to conduct an independent investigation into the killing and ensure that crimes against journalists must not go unpunished. The workplace must be a safe space where workers can do their jobs without fear of being harmed.”
