Somalia: journalist killed in landmine explosion
NUJ joins the IFJ in condemning the killing of Somali National Television reporter Ahmed Mohamed Shukur.
The National Union of Journalists is echoing calls by the International Federation of Journalists for the federal government to ensure the safety and protection of journalists in the country.
Ahmed Mohamed Shukur was killed in a landmine blast on 30 September while covering counter-terrorism operations by the Somali security forces.
NUJ sister union, the National Union of Journalists of Somalia, has “condemned the cruel attack” claiming “the life of a promising journalist who sacrificed his personal safety to bring details of this operation to the people of Somalia and the world in general.” Police Commander, General Farhan Mohamoud Adan was also killed in the blast.
Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:
“The IFJ is deeply saddened by the killing of Shukur, the first journalist murdered in Somalia this year. We call for urgent action to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. Violence against media workers in the country will not end until the crimes against them are punished.”
