Pride 2023
The NUJ and its Equality Council wishes everyone involved in this month’s Pride events solidarity.
Message from the NUJ’s Equality Council
The NUJ is proud to support Pride events taking place across the UK this summer and stands in solidarity with LGBTQ+ in the country and abroad.
A recent report commissioned by the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity found that LGBTQ+ journalists face a hostile environment in the UK. LGBTQ+ media workers face high levels of abuse, including online harassment targeting their sexual identity and gender orientation.
Eighty-seven per cent of the study’s participants did not believe enough is being done to tackle the problem of harassment and abuse against LGBTQ+ journalists, and 78 per cent said that not enough is being done by media organisations to protect them.
The NUJ calls on employers to protect their workers and implement proactive measures so that every LGBTQ+ journalist can carry out their job safely and with dignity.
The NUJ will be sending delegates to the TUC’s LGBT+ Workers Conference from Thursday 29 June to Friday 30 June.
The Equality Council encourages every NUJ member to join and participate in events celebrating and standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ rights and people, not just during Pride Month but all year round.
We encourage every LGBTQ+ member in the union to join the LGBT+ network – where members can call on each other for advice, forge friendships and alliances and propose collective action. You can join by updating your online profile through the NUJ website or [email protected]
If you are interested in our wider equalities work, please email [email protected] to be added to our equality, diversity and inclusion network.
Have a safe Pride.
In solidarity,
NUJ Equality Council
