Palestine: TUC workplace day of action
The NUJ is encouraging branches and chapels to engage with the TUC's workplace day of action on 28 November, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The International Federation of Journalists' records show at least 135 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 7 October 2023. The NUJ has condemned the Israeli government's attacks and killings of journalists and is supporting the TUC's workplace day of action on 28 November, to demonstrate solidarity from across the trade union movement.
The NUJ is urging branches and chapels to show support on the day and amplify the union's calls for a permanent ceasefire, cessation of violence and for the release of all hostages.
What you can do on the day:
-
Take a photo with #ceasefire now messages and share personal statements of solidarity. These could be combined into a collage or video montage for social media.
-
Email [email protected] with solidarity messages we can amplify.
-
Wear something red, green, black or a Palestinian keffiyeh to visibly show solidarity. Photos from the day could be shared on social media, creating a visual display of support.
-
Email your MP urging greater pressure from the government to Israeli Officials on calls to ensure the safety and protection of journalists.
IFJ Safety Fund
The International Federation of Journalists' Safety Fund has proved a lifeline of journalists in Gaza and NUJ members have donated generously over the past year. We know colleagues remain in need of emergency assistance and medical equipment, so raise this at branch meetings and discuss a donation to mark the workplace day of action and lend support.
Palestinian media
According to records held by the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate, 21 local radio stations, 15 local and international news agencies, 15 TV stations, 6 local newspapers, 3 broadcasting towers, eight print media and 13 media institutions have been destroyed over the past 13 months.
On 19 November, the IFJ announced 22 media organisations in Palestine had been awarded grants totalling $1m as part of efforts to support public interest journalism. Find out more on the project.
