Palestine: journalists shot by Israeli forces
Shootings add to growing list of attacks against Palestinian journalists.
The National Union of Journalists has joined the International Federation of Journalists in condemning the shooting of cameraman Louay Samhan and reporter Mahmoud Fawzy while covering a military raid in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has called on the Israeli government to hold those responsible to account and end the targeted attacks against Palestinian media workers.
Israeli military state the cause of injuries are unknown, despite media reports indicating the journalists were shot by Israeli soldiers.
In May, journalists Shireen Abu Akleh and Ali Samoudi were targeted by Israeli soldiers and shot at despite wearing press vests. Abu Akleh’s killing has been condemned by the NUJ, with the union calling for an end to impunity in Israel.
Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:
“We condemn the latest crime in a long list of targeted attacks on Palestinian media workers carried out by Israeli forces. It is time for Israel to halt these crimes and dismantle their system of oppression. It is time for a new UN Convention to enhance the safety, protection and independence of media workers.”
