NUJ welcomes UK haven for media refugees
Union welcomes comments made today and will wait to see further details of the scheme.
The UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab MP, has indicated that he recognises the bravery of Afghan journalists and will consider allowing those who worked for UK media outlets to access a scheme that would enable them to come and live in the UK. The move is in response to a public letter signed by the NUJ and UK media organisations.
Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:
"The media industry united to press the government to offer a safe haven for journalist refugees who are fleeing for their lives. We welcome the governments comments made today and wait to see further details of the scheme, which must be implemented as swiftly as possible."
