New scheme will aid Irish members
Irish government announces new Coronavirus measures.
The NUJ has welcomed new measures announced last night by the Irish government, including wage subsidies for employees in businesses that have been hit by the coronavirus.
Séamus Dooley, Irish Secretary, said the measures should go a long way to addressing the concerns of employers and avert layoffs in the media sector.
Unemployment payment available to both employees and the self-employed has been increased to €305 a week. It is for those who have been made redundant or who have lost their freelance work.
Séamus Dooley said:
"The Irish office has been inundated with requests for assistance from members fearful of lay-offs or redundancy. These measures are a welcome development and follow a very determined campaign by the ICTU. The NUJ has also written to An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar seeking special support for the Irish media, with particular focus on the beleaguered regional media sector."
