Mexico: NUJ condemns killing of journalist Jorge Camero
Journalist's murder adds to increasing number of media workers killed in Mexico this year.
The NUJ has joined the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and National Union of Press Editors, in condemning the murder of journalist Jorge Camero in Mexico's capital. Jorge was director of local news site El informativo, and former personal secretary to Mayor Luis Fuentes Aguilar.
His death adds to the rising number of media workers killed in the country this year.
The IFJ and National Union of Press Editors have called on Mexico's government to implement measures that protect the safety of journalists, prevent deaths, and provide justice for the families of victims.
The IFJ said:
"We demand urgent measures to put a stop to the bloodshed of press workers. We also demand that the protocols for the investigation of crimes against freedom of expression be applied and that no hypothesis linking this crime to Jorge Camero's work as a journalist be ruled out.
It is essential to determine responsibilities and motivations behind this and all the murders of communicators to avoid the perpetuation of impunity, which in Mexico reaches 95% and makes the country one of the most dangerous for journalists."
