Media organisations’ Gender Pay Gap 2023/4

  • 10 May 2024

All companies with more than 250 employees must file data comparing men and women’s average pay across their organisation, the number of men and women in the highest paid bands and who gets a bonus.

The latest figures for 2023/4 show It was a year of mixed fortunes in the annual gender pay gap snapshot.

Around 75 per cent of the main UK media firms improved the percentage of the women at the top and the average UK media gender pay gap is now slightly down from 12 per cent to 11 per cent. However, 91 per cent of the biggest companies are still paying men more than women, according to an analysis by the Press Gazette.

In addition, almost 80 per cent of the firms have more men within the top quarter pay band and 85 per cent of men were given higher bonuses. Concerningly some publishers also registered an increase in pay gaps since reporting began in 2017, including Associated Newspapers (15% to 19%), Hearst (17% to 18%) and Sky UK (8% to 12%).

The NUJ’s analysis of the main publishing, broadcasting and streaming companies shows that in terms of headline media hourly pay Newsquest scored highest, with women earning £1.68 for every £1 that men made in 2023/24. Macmillan also did well with £1.32, the Evening Standard £1.10, Ladbible £1.06 and Random House £1.06.

The worst offenders were The TES and Netflix, where women earnt 72p for every £1 that men earn, when comparing median hourly pay. Liberty Global was just behind with 73p, Channel 4 75p and Roku 76p, whilst Bloomberg and TikTok paid 77p and Independent Digital News & Media 78p. Bloomberg also was near the bottom when looking at the percentage of women in top pay grades (scoring 21.7%).

One of biggest improvers in terms of paying women at the top more was Which. There women occupied 51 per cent of the highest paid jobs, compared with 27 per cent the year before.

Go to the NUJ's campaign page to find out more about the pay gender gap and ways to negotiate strategies with employers to close it, including a template letter to initate discussion on the issue.
