#IWMD20: light a candle for frontline workers
NUJ members are invited to join the ICTU in a candlelight tribute to workers providing essential services during the Coivid-19 crisis and to remember those who have died in the line of duty.
In a powerful message marking International Workers' Memorial Day the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins called for action to match the out-coming of praise for frontline workers during the Covid-19 crisis.
In a recorded message from Áras an Uachtaráin, President Higgins said praise along was not sufficient acknowledgement for workers. The right to proper remuneration, to dignity and a healthy working environment must be recognised, he said.
At 9pm tonight, NUJ members are invited to join the ICTU in a candlelight tribute to workers providing essential services during the Coivid-19 crisis and to remember those who have died in the line of duty.
Séamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary and a member of the ICTU executive council, said:
"We are encouraging union members, their neighbours and friends to light a candle and to post a picture on social media using #IWMD hash tag. We also member those who have died or injured as they carried out their professional duties.
"Martin O'Hagan, Lyra McKee, Veronica Guerin will be of curse in the mind of NUJ members – on this day works around the world are unity in solidarity and remembrance."
