Letter of protest to the Police Service of Northern Ireland
NUJ Belfast and District Branch to inform PSNI chief constable about concern over state surveillance of Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney.
Ahead of Investigatory Powers Tribunal hearings on 28 and 29 February at the Royal Courts of Justice, the NUJ's Belfast and District Branch will write to the Police Service of Northern Ireland expressing "disapproval of the behaviour of the PSNI and state agencies carrying out surveillance of journalists going about their lawful work investigating on behalf of the public."
Jon Boutcher, PSNI chief constable, will receive the branch's corresponsence outlining concern over the experiences of Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney and whether their experiences are indicative of a broader pattern. The NUJ has called for the two-day hearings to be held in open court, in light of the case's fundamental importance.
