Journalists’ Safety Tracker

  • 06 Mar 2025

Use the NUJ’s online tool to inform us of incidents including of abuse, harassment and legal proceedings made against you.

The NUJ’s Journalists’ Safety Tracker launched in 2024, is designed to capture incidents submitted by journalists about the unacceptable abuse encountered through the course of their work. The online resource open to NUJ members and non-members, seeks to create an evidence base that informs the union’s campaigns and discussions with policy makers, on the need for improved protections for journalists.

Abuse should never be viewed as simply part of the job. Using the tracker, journalists can inform the union of incidents including those that occur online, in-person, are targeted at themselves or family members, are related to equipment damage or involve the use of spyware. These are only a few of the types of submissions that can be made using the tracker, journalists can also indicate which platforms incidents occurred on, if these were online.

The NUJ is also keen to capture information on legal proceedings, including legal communications that are aggressive, intimidatory, threatening or abusive and those considered Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs).

Both freelance and staff journalists can make submissions using the online tool. Share it with colleagues to encourage its use to help shape our safety campaigns and efforts to tackle threats against journalists.

We will collate submissions, reporting anonymously on findings.
