Journalists not fair game for abuse
Speaking at the union's biennial delegate conference in Dublin, Séamus Dooley, NUJ Irish secretary, expressed grave concern at the increase in threats and online abuse against journalists.
In an address to conference, he said that journalists are not fair game for abuse and criticised social media platform providers for their failure to adequately protect users against online abuse.
He said:
“NUJ members are demanding a vigorous response from X, better known as Twitter, to the issue of abuse. If complaints need to be investigated over time then posts should be removed on a temporary basis. It is not good enough that abusive posts which impugn the professional integrity of professional journalists are allowed to go unchallenged, often with significant consequences for the mental health of those under attack.”
