IFJ launches solidarity call to support journalists in Turkey and Syria
The International Federation of Journalists has appealed for donations to support journalists and their families affected by the recent earthquake.
The National Union of Journalists has urged members to support journalists in financial hardship following an earthquake on 6 February in south Eastern Turkey. The disaster close to the Syrian border killed thousands, and led to the displacement of journalists in Turkey and Syria with detrimental impacts on their livelihood.
Donations to the IFJ’s International Safety Fund will be used to provide relief to journalists and their loved ones who have lost their homes or been injured. NUJ members should include the reference “IFJ Turkey/Syria Appeal”.
Dominique Pradalie, IFJ president, said:
“The day after the disaster, we offered IFJ support to our Turkish and Syrian unions. It took them several days to assess the situation and the needs of colleagues on the ground. We are now in a position to launch our solidarity call and give them the support they need.”
