Happy Birthday BBC Local Radio
The NUJ and friends have celebrated by tweeting #KeepBBCLocalRadioLocal
Today is the 55th birthday of BBC local radio, but those working there are not celebrating.
The BBC has proposed that most local radio output in the afternoons and evenings will be shared. Overall, BBC local staffing in England is expected to reduce by around 48 posts.
Local radio is popular – latest figures show that 5.7m people tune in to hear local news, traffic reports, weather warnings and chat and entertainment on their local BBC radio station. It was not long ago that the BBC top brass was praising local radio and the lifeline it offered to many during the pandemic. Now they have come forward with plans which could kill it off. Why would you listen to a local radio station which isn’t local anymore?
Today @NUJofficial is asking you to say Happy Birthday to your local radio station and tell #BBC to #KeepBBCLocalRadioLocal
Ask your MP to sign the early day motion 550 BBC local radio programming
This is a campaign we can win. Go to the #KeepBBCLocalRadioLocal campaigns page to find how you can take part.
