Dom Phillips’ apparent murder is a tragic blow to journalists and journalism
NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet responded to a police press briefing last night stating that two bodies discovered appeared to be those of missing journalist Dom and indigenous activist Bruno Pereira.
This came after one of the two men arrested in connection with the pair’s disappearance reportedly confessed to killing them.
She said:
“This is the news that we all feared and hoped would never come. It is a devastating blow for all who knew Dom, NUJ members across the union and journalists around the world. We had all been willing the search to end happily. Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with his wife and his family at this awful time.
“The respect in which Dom was held as a journalist has been abundantly evident in these past ten days. His work was his passion. He was an outstanding campaigning journalist who was determined that his work would help protect a part of the world he loved. That will be his enduring legacy.”
