DM2025: training

  • 25 Apr 2025

Delegates discussed training support and skills offered by the NUJ to members.

“DM believes the union should be at the forefront of current thinking around journalism training and education, particularly how it affects the expectations of newly qualified journalists entering the industry”, said a motion from London Digital Media Branch.

Proposing the motion, Matt Capon, London Digital Media Branch, said there was a potential crisis coming in journalism education, NUJ needs to reaffirm its position as a critical friend to the BJTC (Broadcasting Journalism Training Council).

“There is a real appetite from my students to learn more from the NUJ, and how they can have a successful career in the industry”, he said.

Nick Gowan-Lowe, in support of the motion, said he noticed ‘a complete ruthlessness by media organisations’ and said, recently, Reach plc had four separate rounds of redundancies, which places a constant demand on members and particularly early career journalists. He said some of them are untrained. unsupported and alone.

Christina Zaba, New Media, said, ‘There are two aspects to this. We need to train people, we need to have the NUJ's stamp on this to bring the best into this world. Brilliant motion, please support it.

The motion passed.
