Chad: journalist killed at protest
NUJ backs calls for an independent investigation into the murder.
The National Union of Journalists has joined the International Federation of Journalists in condemning the murder of Oredje Narcisse, shot dead while covering a protest in the capital city N’Djamena.
Reports indicate at least 300 people were injured, and 50 killed as protestors demanded a “quicker transition to democratic rule.” Across cities, citizens demonstrated against the extension of the transitional military council headed by General Mahamat Idriss Deby.
Sister union L’Union des journalistes Tchadien (UJT) has called for an independent investigation into Narcisse’s murder and for those responsible to face justice.
Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:
“The security forces should have taken adequate measures to protect civilians and journalists' lives. It is disheartening to note that an unarmed journalist who was covering a protest was gunned down in cold blood. Such brutal and inhumane acts can only be described as deliberate and an attempt to silence the media.”
