Bangladesh: journalist murdered in knife attack
The NUJ has condemned the murder and urged Bangladeshi authorities to seek justice for Ashiqul Islam's death.
The National Union of Journalists has joined the International Federation of Journalists in condemning the murder of reporter Ashiqul Islam.
On 9 January, Islam was left seriously injured and later died in hospital after being attacked by assailants on his way home. Police have arrested suspect Raihan Mia in conjunction with the journalists’ death, and investigations are ongoing.
Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:
“IFJ expresses its condolences to the Bangladeshi journalists’ fraternity and joins them in seeking a swift investigation into the case and for the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice."
The NUJ is also urging authorities to ensure justice is sought for Islam’s death. His murder is the first journalist killing in the country this year, but follows Shabnam Sharmin’s death in late 2022.
The female journalist was found under suspicious circumstances and sparked calls by Bangladeshi journalists for an investigation, and for action by the government to ensure their protection.
