NUJ: WHO WILL BE OUR NEW UNION LEADER?

London Freelance and Magazine branches are holding a hybrid event hustings with the two candidates for the general secretary of the NUJ.

NUJ members are voting for a new general secretary, with two women vying to take over the role held by Michelle Stanistreet for 14 years.

  • LAURA DAVISON is a full-time national organiser for the union
  • NATASHA HIRST is a freelance photographer and the union’s current President.

Both will be taking part in a hustings debate on WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18 AT 6.30PM. To register, email [email protected]. Give your name, email address and your NUJ branch.

The meeting is free and open to all members of the NUJ, wherever they live and work. It will take place at the NUJ head office in London, and on Zoom. It is presented by the NUJ London Freelance and Magazine branches -- the union itself does not organise hustings.

The live session will be at the NUJ, Headland House, 72 Acton Street, London WC1X 9NB. That is on the corner of Acton Street and Gray’s Inn Road, a five-minute walk from Kings Cross stations. To join online members are asked to register; the Zoom link will be sent to them on September 17.

To register, email [email protected]. Give your name, email address and your NUJ branch.

Those attending will have the chance to put any questions to either candidate or both.

The NUJ matters for journalists working in UK media, and it matters who leads the union. We are a democratic body, and democracy depends on information – that is our job. All members are urged to vote, and need to be well-informed to make the choice.
