The NUJ rulebook defines the structure and the operation of the union.
From who can be a member to how discipline operates in the union, the rules cover most aspects of the union's work.
The NUJ Code of Conduct has, since 1936, set out the main ethical principles of British and Irish journalism.
Apart from those elements required by law, the rule book has been democratically decided by members over the 100+ years of the union's existence. Rule changes can and usually are proposed at each delegate meeting and voted on by delegates.
